1st Abuja Secondary Schools Cricket Fair | (2009-11-24 )

The Nigeria Cricket Federation(NCF) in conjunction with the Cricket Club of Abuja
will hold an Abuja Secondary Schools Cricket Fair on Tuesday, December 1st, 2009
at the National Stadium cricket oval in Abuja.

Already five schools have signified their intention to participate in this NCF initiative
to sow the seeds of the game in schools in Abuja.
Whiteplains British School, Army Day Secondary School Asokoro, Federal Government
Boys’ College Garki, Government Day Secondary School Karu and Government Secondary
School Karu are all participating in the fair which is basically an introductory coaching clinic
for the schools aimed at developing grassroots cricket in Abuja to add to Loyola Jesuit
College which participated in the maiden Indomie National Secondary Schools Cricket
Championship earlier in the year.

The clinic will be handled by two former Nigerian Captains;  Okon Ukpong who is
the current NCF Technical Committee Chairman and his predecessor in office, Ewa Henshaw.

The two NCF coaches will first of all conduct a train-the-trainer programme on Sunday
29th November, 2009 on the membership of the Cricket Club of Abuja(CCA) members who will
support the coaching clinic. Eight CCA members will assist the NCF coaches on the day to
have a reasonable coach to pupils ratio of 1:12. Twenty pupils from each school are expected
for the event.

The NCF President, Kwesi Sagoe remarked that the event will be used by the Federation to mark
World Aids Day in alignment with the marking of the day world-wide by members of the International
Cricket Council(ICC).

He also remarked that this introductory coaching clinic would be done on a periodic basis
across the six geo-political zones in an attempt to popularize the game of cricket at the school
level in the country.
