IBEJU-LEKKI CC OF LAGOS RETAINS NATIONAL CRICKET CLUB TROPHY | (2009-07-30 )
The Ibeju-Lekki Cricket Club(ILCC) of Lagos retained the trophy at the 4th NCF National Cricket Club Championships that held July 10th to 12th, 2009 at the Murtala Muhammed Square oval, home of the Crocodiles Cricket Club of Kaduna. The club defeated the home team, Crocodiles Cricket Club of Kaduna in the final match of the tournament. Four clubs had qualified for the final series as follows; Ibeju-Lekki CC qualified automatically as Club Cricket Committee League champions of Lagos, F-16 CC of Benin qualified as champion club in the Edo League; whilst Crocodiles CC of Kaduna emerged from a play-off in the North-West zone that had them, Cricket Club of Abuja and Kano Club; whilst Whales CC of Port Harcourt emerged from the South East zone that had Unity cricket Club of Awka, Nnamdi Azikiwe University CC, University of Nsukka CC and Owerri CC. In the first semi-final between Ibeju-Lekki CC and Whales CC, Ibeju won the toss and put in Whales CC to bat first. At the end of their innings, Whales CC notched up 111 runs all out in 32 overs with Adegbola scoring 23 and Nnamdi 13. Saheed Akolade was the chief wicket taker for Ibeju with his 3 for 12 in 8 overs and was ably supported by Seye Olympio with 1 for 17 in 7 overs and Haruna Thomas with 1 for 13 in 6 overs. Sean Phillips also contributed with 1 for 20 in 8 overs as well as Seun Adebajo with 1 for 15 in 6 overs. Ibeju knocked off the required 112 runs in 24 overs for the loss of 3 wickets, with Olugbon Olympio scoring 40 runs, supported by Jide Otegbeye 20 and Jide Bejide with 13 runs. Ibeju-Lekki CC thus qualified for the final match with a seven-wicket victory in the match played on friday 10th July, 2009. In the second semi-final match played the next day at the same venue, Crocodiles CC of Kaduna defeated F-16 of Benin by 7 wickets also after F-16 CC won the toss and decided to bat first. Their innings only lasted 82 runs with Gbenga Odedina of Crocodiles CC leading the wicket-takers with 3 for 5 in 8 overs with Emmanuel Gowon taking 2 for 17 in 8 overs and Bapu also taking 2 for 21 in 2 overs. Crocodiles CC scored the 83 runs required for victory for the loss of 3 wickets with Moses Joseph scoring 42 and Samuel Wantana unbeaten on 12. Thus Crocodiles CC qualified for the final match against champions Ibeju-Lekki of Lagos. In the final match, Ibeju-Lekki CC won the toss and elected to bat first scoring 185 runs all out in 45 out of the allotted 50 overs. Sean Phillips was top batsman with 41 runs with contributions from Jide Otegbeye(34), Demola Onikoyi(29) and Jide Bejide(20). Obinna Ohurogu of Crocodiles CC took 2 for 25 in 10 overs; Nimar also took 2 for 5 in 4 overs; whilst Emmanuel Gowon took 1 for 30 in 8 overs and Godwin Onoja had 1 for 15 in 5 overs. Crocodiles CC's innings came to an end at 118 runs in 28.5 overs with Obinna Ohurogu scoring 41 runs with Nimar supporting with 17 and Aderibigbe scoring 13. Ibeju-Lekki CC thus won the match by 67 runs and retained the trophy for another 12 months.
