INDOMIE ZONAL FINALS UPDATE | (2009-02-02 )
The National Secondary Schools Cricket Championships sponsored by Dufil Prima Foods Plc continues to be the toast among secondary school cricketers all over the nation as three zonal finalists have emerged in Lagos, Ogun and the South-South zones.
The Lagos State zone was the first to decide its zonal finalist on the 21st January, 2009 with Obele Community High School, Surulere gaining mastery over St Gregory’s College, Lagos to qualify as the top school in Lagos as far as the Indomie tourney is concerned. The other schools that made it to the semi-final stage in Lagos were Community High School, Surulere and Adebola Baptist High School also in Surulere.
The Indomie cricket train then moved on to Ogun State zone where three schools qualified for the semi-final stage as follows; Ijemo Titun High School, Abeokuta, Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro,and African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta. The qualifiers was played on a round-robin basis.
In the first match on 22nd January, 2009, Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro defeated African Church Grammar School by 37 runs. The Aiyetoro boys batted first after winning the toss and set a target of 144 runs all out in 28 out of their allotted 30 overs. In reply, Afrograms scored 107 runs all out in 22 overs. The second match featured Ijemo Titun High School clashing with the losers of the previous match on the 23rd January, 2009. Ijemo Titun won the toss and elected to bat and achieving a total of 196 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 30 overs. In reply Afrograms made 117 runs all out in 22.4 overs losing by 80 runs and therefore eliminating itself after two straight losses.
The final match pitted the two winners on the 24th January, 2009 as Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro Clashed with Ijemo Titun High School. Ijemo won the toss and batted first scoring 152 for 9 wickets in 30 overs; while Comprehensive High School responded with 105 runs all out in 28.1 overs thereby
Conceding victory to Ijemo Titun High School as the zonal champion. All the matches were played at the MKO Abiola Stadium Cricket oval, Abeokuta.
The South-South zonal qualifier took place on 24th and 25th January, 2009 at the Federal Government
College, Warri grounds and featured the hosts, Western Boys High School, Benin and Stella Maris College, Port Harcourt.
In the first match that pitted the hosts Federal Government College Warri(FGCW) and Western Boys High School, the homesters defeated their Edo counterparts by 6 wickets. Western Boys batted first and set a target 104 runs all out to which the FGCW boys replied with 105 for 3 wickets in 20 overs.
The second game featured FGCW again this time pitching against the boys from Stella Maris of Port Harcourt. FGCW recorded 212 runs for 4 wickets in 25 overs, whilst the Stella Maris boys cut their chase at 148 for 4 losing by 64 runs.
The final match between Stella Maris and Western Boys ended in victory by 4 wickets for the Port Harcourt boys. Western Boys batted first and scored 108 runs for 5 wickets whilst the Stella Maris boys responded with 109 for 6 wickets.
Therefore Federal Government College, Warri emerged zonal champions for the South-South zone.The report of the South-East zonal play-off among Government Secondary School, Owerri, Bishop Crowther, Awka and Government College Umuahia played over the weekend is still expected.
The South-West zonal final between Government College, Ibadan and Ilesha Grammar School as well as the Northern zonal final between Loyola Jesuit College of Abuja and Brain Trust Secondary School, Kaduna will take place this weekend to bring the second round of the Indomie train to an end.
The third round will feature zonal teams which will be constituted with the best talent in each of the six
Indomie zones to be played at two centres in February, 2009. The two centres are Awka and Kaduna. The dates
For the third round matches will be adjusted to accommodate the National Sports Festival holding in Kaduna
From the 15th to the 24th February, 2009 as most of the students will don the state colours during the Festival.
The semi-final and final matches are scheduled for Lagos in March, 2009 according to a statement from the
Nigeria Cricket Federation(NCF) secretatriat.
