OBELE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL WINS INDOMIE FOR LAGOS ZONE | (2009-01-22 )
Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval hosted the final match of the Lagos Zone of the Indomie National Schools Cricket Championship played between arch rivals, St. Gregory's College and Obele Community High School.
St Gregory's won the toss and decided to field first. The Gregorians looked good with the score on 60 for 5 wickets but lost it as the Obele boys played a steady innings and took the score to 127 runs in 25 overs for the loss of 7 wickets. Onumajuru,K scored 18 runs as most runs came from the extras.
In reply, the Obele boys struck early, dismising Arinze for 0. The wickets of Paul Imote and Ntoka Ifeayin fell in quick sucession to bring in Majaro Tobi to the crease. His hard hitting ability lightened up the match but his total score of 35 runs was not good enough to earn the Gregorians a victory. His dismissal gave the Obele players a winning opportunity which they never threw away. The Gregorians ended on 85 runs all out in 23 overs.
Man of the final Match was Kelechi Duru who won a cricket bat and gloves from the Lagos State Cricket Association. Mrs Mary Egbe presented a cash award of N50,000.00, in honour of her late Husband Mr Tony Egbe, former Chairman, Nigeria Cricket Association, to Majaro Tobi of St Gregory's College who was named player of the tournament after scoring 78 runs and took 6 wickets in all games.
The match was graced by top cricket lovers, amongst them were, the Second Vice President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Mr Ewa Henshaw, Mrs Mary Egbe, wife to the late Tony Egbe, former Chairman of the Nigeria Cricket Association, Professor Osato Giwa Osagie, Chairman, Howzat Foundation For Cricket, Mr Roland Ilube, ex- International,the Principal of Obele Community High School and the host Chairman of Lagos State Cricket Association, Mr George Wiltshire.
