PRESS RELEASE | (2009-01-20 )
The Semi final of the Lagos Zone of the Indomie National Schools Cricket Championship took place at two venues on Moday, January 20, 2009. Igbobi College and St Gregory's College hosted both games with St Gregory's College playing Adebola Baptish High School in the first semi Finals while Obele community High school, Surulere took on Community High School, Surulere.
At St Gregory's College, Adebola Baptish could not repeat the show they put up in last week's steriling Bank Cup semi Finals where they beat St Gregory's college at home to deny them the opportunity of playing in this year's finals.
Winning the toss and deciding to field first, the Gregorians bowled out their visitors for 65 runs in just 13.2 overs. Ntoka Ifeayi did the damage by taking 5 wickets for 15 runs in 5 overs. The only double figures scorer for the visitors was Amonakhai Clement with 15 runs. In reply, the Gregorians scored 66 runs in 12.3 overs with Majaro Tobi top scoring with 26 runs which included 2 sixes and 3 fours and was supported by Captain Andrew Amioleme (13 runs) who was missed in the last encounter due to his late return from his holiday trip in London. Gregs won by 4 wickets.
In the other Semi Finals played at Igbobi College, Obele Community High School won the toss and elected to bat. Obele Community High School Scored an impressive 116 runs all out in 19.4 overs. Prosper Mgbanwa top scored with 43 runs off 28 balls and was supported by Iheanacho Nnamdi with 23 runs in 23 balls. Shonola Isaac and Muibi Lateef both got 3 wickets each for 19 runs in 4 and 3 overs respectively in the Community High School's bowling attack.
Community High School in reply could only manage 53 runs all out in 17.2 vers. Onumajuru Kemdi and Ibim Daminabo got 3 wickets each for 12 and 7 runs respectively. Obele Community High School won by 63 runs.
The Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval will on Wednesday witness the best two teams in Lagos State compete for the Indomie Cricket shield , Lagos Zone.
Obele Community High School, in recent times have always been close runners behind Gregs in Lagos School's Cricket, but this year is looking good for them as they have remained unbeaten in all matches played, both sterling cup and Indomie so far. They have players who have a rich experience of Primary to secondary school cricket development programme of the Howzat Foundation for Cricket and have been playing for the past 8 years. Analysts say they have a big chance to clinch the shield with their unbearen run and if the big names deliver on that day. Players to watch out for - Prosper Mgbanwa, Taiwo Odeyemi, Ayite Folli, Iheanacho Nnamdi and Kelechi Duru.
St Gregory's College will be coming into the finals remembering their defeat to Obele in Warri two years ago and in Ugheli last year during the Howzat Phillip Asiodu Tournament. Six of their key players who have left school and have been key to their success in recent years will be a big disadvantage to them for the Wednesday game. However, they should not be under rated as the current players have taken time to establish themselves in Lagos School boy cricket. Majaro Tobi, Ntoka Ifeayi and Andrew Amioleme are the cricketers to watch in the interesting encouter which promises to be explosive.
It is also worthy to note that St Gregory's College have beaten Obele Community High School twice in Lagos State and have lost to them twice out side Lagos.
Percentage on victory ----- Obele Community High School - 55%. St Gregory's College- 45%.
