REPORT OF THE MAIDEN EDITION OF THE INDOMIE SCHOOLS CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP, LAGOS ZONE | (2008-12-18 )
INDOMIE NATIONAL SCHOOLS CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP LAGOS ZONE-PRELIMINARY ROUND DATE; 28TH NOV, 2008 TO 15TH DEC, 2008 VENUES; ANSAR-UD-DEEN GRAMMAR SCHOOL ST GREGORY'S COLLEGE IGBOBI COLLEGE TAFAWA BALEWA SQUARE CRICKET OVAL REPORT Ten schools qualified to take part in the Lagos Zone of the tournament and where grouped into 3 groups. 4 in group A and 3 each in groups B and C. At the end of the preliminary round, 2 schools qualified to the semi finals from group A while 1 each from groups B and C. HOW THEY PLAYED IN THE GROUPS GROUP A St Gregory's College Community High School, Surulere Ansar-ud-deen Grammar School, Surulere Onitolo Community High School The group seems to be the toughest group. Community High School Surulere toped the group by beating everybody in the group. St gregory's College picked the second ticket by beating Ansar-ud-deen Grammar School and Onitolo Community High School. Ansar-ud-deen did not get a place in the Semis but managed a victory against Onitolo Community who lost every game in the group. GROUP B Obele Community High School, Surulere Stadium High School, Surulere Igbobi College, Yaba Obele Community dominated the group and got the only ticket available by beating Igbobi College and Stadium High School. Stadium High School had a work on Igbobi Colege to clinch the second place. GROUP C Adebola Baptist High School, Surulere King's College, Lagos Coker Secondary School Adebola Baptist High School got a suprising ticket in this group by defeating King's College and Coker Secondary School. King's College could only manage a victory against Coker Secondary school to stay in an invaluable second possition. UMPIRING ACUSN- Lagos Chapter handled all matches during the tournament. CHALLENGES/OBSERVATIONS 1. Too many venues required and so equipment not enough to be circulated 2. No proper playing and mating surfaces in schools 4. Playing standards very low due to lack of coaching 5. No Publicity and hype in the schools. SUGGESTIONS 1. More equipment to be provided at all match venues 2. Mating/playing surfaces to be provided in strategic schools to assist school development 3. Coaching programmes to be attached to the tournament months before the start of the tournament. 4. Their is need for publicity through promotional items from the beginning of the tournament such as books, biros, banners and fliers will also assist. SEMI FINAL FIXTURES 1. St Gregory's College vs Adebola Baptist High School Venue: St Gregory's College Date: 19th January, 2009 Time: 2 pm 2. Obele Community High School vs Community High School Venue: Igbobi College Date: 19th January, 2009 Time: 2 pm FINAL 21ST OF JANUARY, 2009 VENUE :Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval, Race Course, Lagos TIME: 1 pm GEORGE WILTSHIRE CHAIRMAN LAGOS STATE CRICKET ASSOCIATION
