ACA/ICC North-West Africa U-17 Tournament Flags off in Abeokuta | (2008-11-04 )

The ACA/ICC North-West Africa U-17 tournament opened yesterday
in Abeokuta at both the MKO Abiola Stadium and the Abeokuta Sports
Club ovals as Nigeria and Ghana got off to good starts with victories
over Gambia and Sierra Leone respectively.
 
After a brief opening ceremony that had the Commissioner of Sports
in Ogun State, Bukola Olopade addressing the six participating countries,
the Special Guest of Honour, Chief Lamidi Sofenwa bowled the symbolic
first ball to get the tournament off.
 
Nigeria clashed with Gambia at the MKO Abiola Stadium oval, while Ghana
and Sierra Leone sized each other up at the Abeokuta Sports Club after
the Nigerian captain Abiodun Abioye had taken the oath on behalf of all
the players whilst Ghanaian umpire, Eugene King performed the rite on
behalf of all officials.
 
Nigeria won the toss and put in the Gambians to bat. Gambia was 82 all
out which the Nigerian team knocked off for the loss of 3 wickets winning
by 7 wickets.
 
At Abeokuta Sports Club, Ghana batted first and notched 242 runs whilst
restricting their Sierra Leonean counterparts to 78 runs winning by 164
runs.
 
Later this morning, the Nigerian team will face Cameroon while Ghana
meets Mali in continuation of the group stage matches. On Wednesday,
the final matches of the group stage will be played; while on Thursday
semi-final matches will pair the winner in Pool A which has Nigeria,
Gambia and Cameroon with the runner-up in Pool B which has Ghana,
Sierra Leone and Mali and the winner in Pool B with the runner-up in
Pool A.
 
The final match and third-placematch will take place on Friday, November
7th, 2008.
