Nigeria ended its participation at the WCL Africa 2 in Benoni, South Africa
in style by beating West African neighbour, Ghana by 70 runs to finish in
second place after tournament winners, Botswana.
The tournament which started with Nigeria ranked fourth out of the six
participants has had a major change with Nigeria moving into second place
ahead of Mozambique(previously ranked 2nd) and Zambia(formerly ranked 3rd).
The ranking after the tournament is now Botswana 1st, Nigeria 2nd, Zambia 3rd,
Mozambique 4th, Ghana 5th and Swaziland 6th.
In Nigeria's last match, the Ghanaians won the toss and put Nigeria to bat. The
batting build-up was patient and for the fourth time in the tourney, Nigeria
scored over 200 runs reaching 241 for the loss of 6 wickets in 50 overs.
Endurance Ofem scored an unbeaten 53, Kunle Adegbola 50, Jide Bejide 49, Chimezie
Onwuzulike 28 all contributed to the task of ensuring that Ghana would not reach
the score.
After lunch, the Ghanaians faced up to task of overcoming 241 runs. From 39
for 1 in 12 overs to 81 for 3 in 24 to 157 for 7 in 47 overs before they finally
finished their 50-over allocation with a score of 171 for 7; 70 runs short of the
Nigerian total.
Once again, Endurance Ofem was named man-of-the match for his unbeaten
53 runs.
Breaking news: At the official closing dinner for the tournament, Endurance Ofem
was voted Player of the Tournament by ICC-Africa.
