The Ghana cricket team last week emerged as the winner of the World Cricket League Africa Division 3
tournament that held in Benoni, South Africa. The competition as contested by seven countries i.e.
Ghana, Swaziland, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi and Gambia. A South African Invitation team
took the place of Morocco who was absent.
The participants were divided into two pools of 4 teams with Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Lesotho and Malawi
in Pool 1; while Ghana, Swaziland, Gambia and the Invitation Team made up Pool 2.
By the end of the group stages, Sierra Leone won all its matches against its opponents earning 6 points,
while Rwanda finished second with 4 points, Lesotho had two points and Malawi was winless.
In Pool 2, the Invitation Team won all its matches finishing with 6 points, Ghana had 4, Swaziland had 2
and Gambia was also winless.
As a result Sierra Leone and Rwanda clashed in one semi-final, while Ghana and Rwanda squared off in
the other. Sierra Leone won the toss and elected to bat first and were consequently bowled out for 116 runs
in 37.2 0vers with J. Wright taking 5 wickets for 17 runs for the Swaziland that lost to Ghana in the group
matches. E. Kamara was the top batsman for Sierra Leone with 28 runs.
Swaziland won with 4 wickets to spare with J. Wright scoring 48 whilst L. Lamin took 4 wickets for 19 runs.
In the other semi-final, Ghana put in Rwanda to bat after winning the toss and bowled them all out for
a mere 23 runs in 11.1 overs with I. Aboagye taking 6 wickets for 9 runs. Ghana consequently won by 8 wickets.
Thus Ghana squared up with Swaziland for the second time in the series for the final match, while Sierra Leone
faced Rwanda in the third-place match.
